Espacio Cartuja – Artist In Residence Program

Espacio Cartuja – AIR Program

AIR Program is an international artistic residency programme at Espacio Cartuja, a new creative space based in Granada (Spain), whose aim is to provide a space for contemporary artistic creation, supporting the current artistic sector of emerging international art.

This project takes over the baton from Espacio Lavadero’s LAV residency programme, also located in Granada, collaborating with its organisers and founders.

The residency offers accommodation, work space and also an exhibition space. AIR Program provides a comfortable and convenient place, based on coexistence and community, with work areas and an exhibition room for specific events.

Many artists have passed through LAV, AIR’s predecessor, to develop their projects. Here you can see the archive of the artists and their creations.

Residency

Cartuja AIR Program offers a house divided into two independent spaces: a space for creation and at the same time for the exhibition of the pieces created during the stay, and another for accommodation.

The residence is called LA CASA DE LOS PINTORES. It is a traditional Andalusian house on two floors, with three independent bedrooms, one of them double, a living-dining room, two bathrooms and a beautiful patio with a summer lounge. It has air conditioning in the three bedrooms and the living room, wifi, and all the windows are exterior facing, offering plenty of natural light to each room. The house has an excellent location in the Cercado Bajo de Cartuja neighbourhood, at the foot of the Cartuja University Campus, 300 metres from the Cartuja Monastery, very close to the emblematic Albaicín neighbourhood, a World Heritage Site since 1984, and only 10 minutes walk from the city centre.

The house comes with bed linen and towels, plus a spare set, washing machine and fully equipped kitchen. Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport, the nearest airport, is 16 km away.
The workplace is located in the other independent space, but situated in the same building. Espacio Cartuja is a well-lit space, at street level, ideal for creating. The predecessor of this space is Espacio Fuentenueva (@espaciofuentenueva), an alternative exhibition space run by the same organisers for the last five years until the founding of Espacio Cartuja.

  • The creation room will serve as an exhibition room for the final exhibition.
  • Work may be performed only in the workplace, excluding the rest of the house.
  • Travel expenses, subsistence allowance and creation materials are not included in the residency.
  • The accommodation expenses (water, electricity and wifi) are included in the membership fee

Granada

The residency programme is located in the centre of the city of Granada, situated on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the region of Andalusia. It is famous for its great examples of medieval Andalusian architecture, in particular La Alhambra, the most visited monument in the country and considered the eighth wonder of the world.

Granada is a city with a great historical heritage and a culture based on diversity. An ideal place to explore and create, with access to local archives, libraries, museums, theatres and the university.

Granada is an ideal setting for creation, being a multicultural, open and accessible city. Its location puts us close to inspiring neighbourhoods and enclaves such as El Albaicín, El Realejo, La Alhambra, Sierra Nevada and La Alpujarra. The tropical coast of Granada is only 45 minutes away by car, where you can enjoy beautiful beaches and whitewashed villages such as Salobreña and Almuñécar.

FAQ

The selection process is carried out by the Espacio Lavadero team, and parameters such as the solvency of the proposal and other premises such as originality, theme, needs, etc. are taken into account.

Yes, companions are allowed as long as they share a room with the resident, and assuming an extra cost per week.

We are sorry but we cannot allow this option as the residents’ accommodation is not our property.

Residents’ accommodation is located in the same building as Espacio Cartuja, a 10-minute walk from Granada city centre.

Normally there will be three, four or five artists working in the residency simultaneously.

The booking is formalised by making a deposit of 50% of the total fee. The process is done through the WISE platform.

The membership fee includes accommodation, work space and the possibility to exhibit your work at the end of the month in a group exhibition. Electricity costs for accommodation are included.

There is no additional cost, but a deposit will be requested for the accommodation, which will be returned at the end of the stay if there are no problems.

The deposit is returned the following week after the end of the stay at the residence hall, once everything has been checked to ensure that everything is in order.
In the event of any incident, such as breakage or damage, this will have to be covered with the money from the deposit of the person responsible.

No refunds are contemplated due to the management costs.

SYRINE DAIGNEAULT

01.07.2024 – 31.08.2024

Syrine Daigneault is a visual artist based in Montréal/Tiohtià:ke (Canada) whose pictorial exploration responds to a need to understand her representations and lived experience. Her reflections are informed by her own experience, but also by the study of socio-cultural phenomena with a critical eye. A search for historicity, drawn from both Western and Middle Eastern culture, due to her dual Syrian and Canadian origins, enables her to track down the social norms and forces that influence her representations and vision of the world. Syrine Daigneault holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in visual and media arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal.

At the age of 20, during a long trip to France, Spain and Morocco, Syrine chose to stay in Granada for a few months because she felt at home there, recognizing herself in the city’s cultural mix. Syrine will take advantage of two months of research and creation at Espacio Cartuja to visit cultural sites such as the Alhambra. She is highly interested in the history of Al-Andalus and the great figures who lived there, such as Averroes, Lubna of Cordoba and Ibn Tufayl. This research will provide the inspiration for her studio work.

01.08.2024 – 31.08.2024

Iván is an artist from Venezuela who lives and works in Barcelona (Spain).
His work explores natural phenomena and their most delicate and sublime features. The names of each series invite an event, an event in motion.
Iván offers a new vision about something we know, perhaps a landscape or an experience.
The presence of gesture in his work generates an image of abstract expressionism balanced between the delicacy of technical detail together with the sensitivity of the body and human imagination.
Explore the creative process using spray paint in a free space, where intuition and improvisation guide the aesthetic language. This practice is influenced by techniques and movements from his graffiti experience, allowing him to interpret materials, tools, dynamics and processes to participate in a new conversation about the relationship between divine nature, urban nature and us as a link.
Through painting he reflects the matter and phenomena of divine nature and human nature, capturing images of a place or a moment that we recognize: a space with light, shadow, breeze and sand.
In this vital journey through time and space we use play as a driving force and the senses as tools, highlighting ideas, moments and spontaneous and genuine expressions, inherent to the nature of each of us.
